Wayang Wong

These dances are a modern extension of the court dances of the nineteenth century, which tended to use that other Indian epic, the Mahabharata, as the source of their story lines. Based upon systems to train and instill discipline in young princesses and princes, the wayan wong is an aristocratic, slow moving dance performance, accompanied by a regal Javanese gamelan orchestra. Gracious body movements and certain glances reveal character traits and mood swings. It is an unique dance, transferred from one generation to another one.

We organize a private performance inside the Sultan’s Palace, hosted by a member of the royal family of Yogyakarta, direct descendants or close family of the Sultan. In a setting reminding of bygone days, the antiques of the palace and the quiet surroundings, attribute to a magic atmosphere.
